As I take a step back to reflect on my time going through SCCS from preschool through senior year at CCHS, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to receive a Christian education and humbled by the sacrifices that were made to provide me with that opportunity. While at Chicago Christian, I participated in football, track, band, mock trial, student council, and senior activities committee. At CCHS I made lifelong friends whose kids occasionally call me “uncle.” From dissecting frogs and pigs with Mrs. Vilendrer to learning the states and capitals of Central America in Spanish with Mrs. Roozeboom (that song still pops into my head every now and then), mentorship groups with Mr. Payne, and Chapels, every moment, interaction, and experience was orchestrated by God for the life He had planned for me.

I graduated from Chicago Christian in 2000, but when I recently drove by the soccer stadium of CCHS, the memories rushed back. Tight soccer cleats, the sun dipping behind the gymnasium, and a group of friends ready to play. Many of my memories of high school are anchored on that field.  From homecoming court to running the mile for gym class, I loved the fresh air and the field.

As a person who struggled with dyslexia and ADHD, academic life was tolerable only because of Mrs. Iannarone in Academic Support. My spell checker, Mrs. Iannarone, needed to check and recheck each essay I wrote. She was patient and kind as I was easily distracted and flustered. She was calm and redirected my thoughts as they drifted from my work. I am forever grateful for her support through high school.

Coming into CCHS as a new student outside the SCCS system was scary and intimidating, but I quickly realized that my worries were unwarranted.  It didn’t take long before I was making friends and finding where I belonged within the CCHS community.  Mrs. Lenters was instrumental in getting me involved in the theatre program, and I went on to perform in seven out of the eight productions during my four years.  I also found a place as a member of several vocal ensembles, including Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, Men’s Ensemble, and various smaller groups that performed for the Fine Arts Festival each year.  I would say that was all time well spent, considering I went on to have a seven-year career as a professional actor and singer.

When I share about my life and what I am proud of, Chicago Christian High School always comes up. My time at CCHS was transformative and paved an incredible path for my future. The community brought me examples of God-led lives that I still remember. From classmates who were passionate about their devotion to Jesus to teachers who prayed at the opening of class, it was clear that God’s presence saturated this place. I still have my “Record of Becoming” reflections that I wrote while in Mr. Siemer’s Comp & Grammar class reminding me of the journey the Lord has walked with me.

It is crazy to think my time at CCHS came to an end seventeen years ago, and what comes to mind is a bittersweet feeling. Bitter in the sense I feel I didn’t take full advantage of my time there. My years there were amazing, but as I look back, I regret not leaning in academically, not taking hold of all the opportunities made available, and not embracing the community. Reflecting I realize how formative those years were. I see how God had been working through the staff, teachers, and administrators as they showed and shared the love, grace, and patience of Christ.

While at CCHS, I was involved in extracurriculars through which I developed fond memories. I enjoyed being a part of the basketball team all four years of high school. My senior year was my favorite season because we made it to super sectionals and had a lot of fun. I learned that working hard pays off, but it’s important to have some fun along the way. I also enjoyed being a part of DECA, a club that prepares students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. I developed networking skills through DECA, and I have fond memories of the state competition which helped me learn to think on my feet. The PLTW Biomed classes were foundational in developing a desire to pursue a career in healthcare.
